2016 Young Urban Hero

<p>Passionate about social justice, 10th grader Feiry Guiaba is a founding member of the debate team at the High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice. Growing up in West Harlem, he began debating with the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL) in 7th grade, and competed with perfect attendance at every tournament. In addition, Feiry regularly volunteers with The League.</p> <!–more–><p>Feiry has won multiple awards including 2016 NYCUDL City Champion Speaker and NYC State Champion Speaker in Novice Public Forum Debate. As an 8th grader, Feiry was the 29015 NYCUDL City Champion in Middle School Varsity Parliamentary Debate.</p> <p>Feiry has trained for two summers in Vermont on fiull scholarship at the Coolidge Institute, studying debate with an economics concentration. He also studied debate at Hunter College, and this past summer, taught debate to beginners at the Harlem Debate Institute at Columbia University. This fall, he is supplementing his academic coursework with a philosophy class at NYU. He is a debate scholarship recipient from the Kirkland Ellis Law Firm, whose support has opened the door to national level competitions. He interned with Intelligence Squared US, the popular debate series and NPR podcast. Last year, he was featured four times on the Greg Gutfeld Show. a comedy news program, providing political commentary on the presidential debates.</p> <p><img class=aligncenter” title=”IMG_6503.JPG” src=”https://cdn2.hubspot.net/hubfs/3457829/Imported_Blog_Media/IMG_6503.jpg” alt=””></p>”
