A group of school teachers founded the New York City Urban Debate League in 2011 with the mission of increasing the number of public schools in New York City with debate programs. There is empirical evidence of debate helping students improve their grades, graduation rates, and not just college enrollment but college readiness, while also becoming more engaged and informed citizens. At that time, fewer than ten public schools in the city had debate programs. The League started with those few schools and fundraising from bake sales, before incorporating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on May 9, 2012.

The NYCUDL has grown the number of NYC Title I schools with debate programs to over 250 across the city, and is the largest urban debate league in the country. Through partnerships with the New York City Department of Education’s NYC Reads initiative and Community School Districts 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, and 16, as well as robust efforts to expand outreach to underserved communities, the NYCUDL has grown to serve 4,000 students citywide.

How We Unlock Transformation Through Debate

Transformation is not just achieved by creating debate opportunities. It’s about meeting students where they are, creating a path to those opportunities, and walking that path hand in hand with them.

Scaffolding

The NYCUDL has rewritten the model of teaching debate by breaking down the concepts novice debaters are often expected to just absorb in a curriculum with engaging lesson plans that new debate coaches can easily use.

Relevant Topics
We write debate resolutions about topics that reflect students’ passions. Students learn that implementing the change they want to see in their communities happens one policy at a time, and gain the tools to turn their passion into action.
Tournament Experience
League Stamina
Where others reduced programming due to COVID, the NYCUDL increased it by expanding the number of tournaments, online activities, and teaching resources available to coaches and debaters. The NYCUDL maintained 84% participation even during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a national high for debate leagues with students from all backgrounds. As of our 2024-2025 season, nearly 80% of member schools were Title I. The League served over 4,043 students from over 250 schools—and those numbers only continue to grow!
