We are deeply honored that Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, recorded a special video message for our Open League students ahead of their virtual tournament on February 7th.
As part of our Black History Month programming, Leader Jeffries shared words of encouragement with more than 600 NYCUDL Open League debaters, reminding them of the power of civic engagement and quoting the late John Lewis, with whom he served in Congress, urging students to use their voices and get into “good trouble.”
We are grateful that Leader Jeffries took the time to uplift and inspire our students during this important month. His message reinforces the values at the heart of debate — thoughtful engagement, courage, and a commitment to strengthening our democracy. Thank you, Leader Jeffries, for supporting NYCUDL students and encouraging the next generation of leaders.
