In 2011 the New York City did not have a scholastic debate league.  Less than 1% of city schools had debate teams and less than 1% of city youth had access to debate.  The New York City Urban Debate League was founded to reverse these statistics. Today, over 1000+ students participate in monthly debates and over 100 NYC schools have curricular or extracurricular debate programs.

All this has been accomplished by people passionate about scholastic debate, youth education, civic engagement, and closing the achievement gap.  From alumni to school teachers to parents to volunteers to all who support the mission that every school should have a debate program.

The Friends of NYC Debate is open to all our volunteers, donors, supporters, parents, alumni, and everyone passionate about supporting this mission.  We meet once a month in a phone conference, we work in various committees on specific projects (ie education and workshops, fundraising and special events, summer debate institute planning, volunteer recruitment, legal outreach and more).  We have a Google Group “Friends of NYC Debate” to facilitate communications, ideas, and announcements.

So please visit and join our Google Group or send us a message if you have additional questions.

Thank you for supporting our Great Debaters!
