During the long weekend, many Middle School and High School debaters took the chance to sleep in on Saturday. With the Bronx Borough Championships approaching, MSQI around the corner and the High School season finished, it was a quiet weekend for the older debaters of the league.
However, Saturday provided a chance for our youngest debaters to step into the spotlight. Hosted by Harlem Outreach Director, Tyler Beattie, thirteen elementary school teams debated at PS 161 Pedro Albizu Campos. Early Scholars Academy topped the Scrimmage in individual Speaker points, with Caroline Xiong, Aidan Tan and Samantha Tann taking the top three spots. Candido Rivera (161), Maxine Moreno (161), Anelyse Lopez (ESA) and Adam Akaeze (ESA) all tied for the fourth speaker spot with 53.5 points within two rounds, just behind Samantha Tann by less than one third of a point.
Despite being behind in speaker points, the team of Rodriguez, Rivera and Nock from 161 took the Scrimmage over Early Scholars Xiong, Chen and Tan. Congratulations to them, we hope to see them continue debate in the future and succeed in our Middle School and High School tournaments!
Thank you for PS 161 and Early Scholars Academy for attending, and thank you to Tyler Beattie for advocating for debate at the Elementary level!
