INTRODUCTION TO CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE

ABOUT CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE

"Student Congress," or "Congressional Debate" or "NYC Youth Council" simulates authentic American congressional style debate at the local, state and federal levels. In Congressional Debate, students emulate legislative members by debating bills and resolutions. Before the event, each school submits mock legislation to each tournament. After the legislation has been compiled, it is distributed to each participating team. Each team attempts to research as many topics as possible, with the goal of being able to speak on both sides of every legislation. In the New York City Debate League we model after the NYC City Council.  Students research, write, and debate local legislation as any NYC Council Member would.  This provides a unique and authentic learning experience as students act as NYC legislators to propose solutions to local public policy problems.
